How to read an IES photometric report for street lights

Read an IES photometric file or accompanying report by first matching its identity to the proposed luminaire, optics and revision, then checking the stated test basis when available. Use its distributions with the project geometry in a qualified reviewer’s calculation. A file or plot alone cannot establish installed lighting performance or acceptance.

Does the file identify the proposed luminaire?

Ask the supplier to connect the file name and internal identifiers to the exact proposal, including the optical option and document revision. If a report accompanies the file, check that both describe the same configuration and stated test basis. Record missing or unclear information rather than assuming a familiar file name proves a match. Request the relevant material only where available.

What do candela distributions and plots show?

Candela describes luminous intensity in a direction. Distribution tables and plotted curves help a reviewer see how intensity varies with direction in the represented configuration. Check the plot labels, units, orientation and any stated scaling before comparing curves. A differently oriented or scaled plot can mislead a visual comparison; ask the reviewer to interpret unclear conventions rather than treating the shape as a road result.

How should lumens and ratings be read?

Where a document states lumens, power or other luminaire ratings, ask what those terms refer to and under which stated conditions they apply. Keep document terminology separate from a guarantee for goods delivered or illumination on the ground. Reconcile the proposed luminaire and its operating condition with the supporting records. Neither a watt figure nor a lumen entry establishes service life or site suitability.

Which geometry belongs in the calculation?

Provide the mounting height, tilt, spacing, road widths, pole positions and relevant surrounding geometry from the project drawing. Identify intended controls and operating modes so the reviewer can assess the input assumptions. Ask a local qualified project reviewer to use the matching file in calculations against the project’s applicable criteria. This guide sets no lux target and does not replace that assessment or predict acceptance.

What other evidence should be cross-checked?

Compare the file identity with the quotation, drawings, control description and other available supporting documents. Ask whether a proposed change in optics, mounting or operation requires revised evidence or calculations, and keep the versions together. Installed verification and acceptance need local qualified review under the project requirements.
